Job Description

Position Summary: 

Supervise and direct the delivery of skilled emergency and non-emergency services in a variety of areas including emergency medical operations, advanced medical assistance, mentoring, training, quality improvement, education, agency coordination, and other duties as required. This position serves as the officer in charge of a group of subordinates in the field, office, or formal classroom setting. Incumbents may be assigned to specialty positions including administration, special operations, QA/QI, training, or logistics; incumbents may be required to stand duty and respond as needed during off duty periods; fill in for superiors or other EMS captains when necessary; and engage in provision of advanced life support pre-hospital patient care as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications   

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.

• Minimum of One (1) year experience in the field of EMS health care or equivalent.

• Experience as an BLS field training officer (FTO) or BLS preceptor.

• Certified as a Colorado State EMS Provider with IV Endorsement.

• Must be eligible to function as an emergency medical vehicle operator in accordance with Colorado Regulations and City/Departmental policy.

• Must have a valid driver’s license.

• Maintain Colorado Certification with minimum level of ALS-1 Provider.

• Must maintain AHA Certification for CPR /BLS provider.

Job Requirements:  

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/overnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime to meet operational needs if needed.
  • May be assigned to supervisory specialty positions including, but not limited to, Administration/Human Resources, QA/QI, Recruitment, Training, or Supply.
  • Required to take on-call at least 1 week a month. Successful completion of a field training program resulting in release to function as an EMT-B IV under general supervision within forty-five (45) days of initial orientation, including required endorsement by the Agency Medical Director. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
  • Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned and can vary based on day-day operations.
  • Must maintain professional certificates and affiliations as determined by the agency.

Reports To:   

Reports directly to the EMS Coordinator.

Works closely and coordinates with other EMS Captains.

Responsibilities:  

In addition to the job duties and responsibilities listed for the provider level of the Field Captain, the Field Captain is responsible for directing the activities of subordinates. They are required to delegate tasks as need, monitor work assignments, communicate performance expectations, evaluate performance, schedule personnel, maintaining discipline and control to ensure effective use of department human resources. The Field Captain is required to perform those supervisory activities required to ensure that the delivery of EMS services and performance follow departmental, city and state policies and procedures.

These responsibilities include activities such as:  

  • Supervise individuals performing emergency medical activities through continued follow-up by scheduling supervisory rides.
  • Responds to EMS calls and assists with coordination of patient care and manages on scene EMS operations up to current provider level of certification.
  • Ensure personnel safety and accountability to maintain seamless operations during emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Assists with the development, administration, and delivery of EMS services for our communities.
  • Coordinates with EMS provider agencies, law enforcement, health care and state agencies and other institutions as needed.
  • Represents the Department at a variety of community meetings regarding pre-hospital emergency medical care.
  • Assumes command and directs activities of personnel at the scene of an emergency until relieved by a superior officer or command is transferred.
  • Assists the EMS Coordinator in the coordination of the Department’s ALS/BLS training program, including the training of new EMT-Basic, Advanced EMT, EMT-Paramedics and the ongoing training of certified Emergency Medical Responders and other personnel as requested.
  • Recommends corrective action and resolves problems.
  • Initiates disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations for changes to improve the quality of EMS programs and services. Works to ensure that program objectives are met.
  • Participates in the development, administration, and delivery of EMS and public information/education programs.
  • Monitors the quality and appropriateness of patient care and documents the effectiveness of protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Recommends changes in protocols and standards to the EMS coordinator and Medical Director.
  • Works to enhance EMS skills and remains informed of changes in pre-hospital emergency medical technology and practices.
  • Develops training materials and keeps training records on assigned personnel.
  • Manages the certification and/or recertification of Advanced Life Support (ALS) and/or Basic Life Support (BLS) providers and/or instructors and is responsible for evaluating EMS training activities for effectiveness, with an emphasis on its impact on department service delivery and conducts classroom and other training.
  • Manages EMS equipment and supplies. Recommends and purchases equipment, books, and materials for EMS purposes and delegates task as needed.
  • Performs the duties of Emergency Medical Technician as required.
  • Monitor and supervise training activities including didactic classes, table-top exercises, psychomotor skill sessions, and tests.
  • Coordinate those activities required to maintain and support the operation of the department’s equipment, apparatus, and facilities to ensure operational readiness.
  • Safely operate emergency ambulances and other light duty emergency medical response vehicles.
  • Follow all emergency medical services regulations and protocols.
  • Assume incident command or leadership position as required for management of emergency scenes including those involving multiple patients or complex rescues; assess, evaluate, and request resources needed during emergency operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all EMS regulations.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
  • Ensures that patient care reporting forms and computer data entries are completed for every patient treated and reviews for accuracy.
