Maumee Valley Country Day School seeks an empathetic and experienced counselor to provide social and emotional support to students within a community of intellectual excellence. A strong candidate has experience working with a diverse population of students and adults across a range of social and emotional needs. In addition, candidates should be able to respond to pertinent issues of student and employee well-being as they arise.
This position reports to the Director of Student Support and collaborates closely with the Student Support Team, Lower School Counselor, faculty, staff, and administration. As a full-time MVCDS employee, the position offers medical, dental, vision, tuition remission, life insurance, and all other benefits afforded to full-time employees.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
The school counselor works directly with students, grades 4-12 individually and in small groups. The school counselor also provides preventative and consultative services to students, teachers, advisors, administrators, and parent(s)/guardian(s) to provide wraparound services, in conjunction with the student support team, for students’ and families’ social and emotional well-being. This includes connections and referrals to outside resources, as well as working with outside providers to support students while in school. Crisis counseling and response are also provided when necessary.
- Working with student support team to support the social and emotional health of students.
- Working with School Psychologist, School Nurse, and Learning Support/Intervention Specialists to provide wraparound support to students needing intervention and learning support plans.
- Working with students and families in 4-12 to help prevent and address social and emotional issues and develop self-advocacy skills.
- Create and present educational sessions in response to identified community needs for classes, student programming, and professional development
- Responsible for responding to students in crisis, conducting age-appropriate risk assessments or de-escalation strategies, and connecting families to appropriate resources, as well as working with students with social and emotional needs to address needs in the classroom.
- Supports teachers and administrators in responding to and appropriately reporting concerns of child abuse/neglect.
- Coordinating data-driven behavioral and social-emotional supports (including classroom observation, data collection, documentation of strengths and areas of need, and coordinating team meetings) and writing and implementing plans for student support across grades 4-12.
- Communicating regularly with parents of students receiving services to promote an ongoing supportive home-school relationship.
- Consulting with outside providers to help coordinate services and support for students within the school setting.
- Conducting social-emotional groups addressing issues such as conflict, friendship, emotional regulation, and coping with life changes.
- Meeting with teaching teams regularly to support in implementing positive school culture, and addressing individual and classroom-wide social-emotional needs.
- Developing and teaching Character and Social-Emotional curriculum in grades 4-12.
- Developing and teaching preventive programming such as drug and alcohol prevention, self-harm and suicide prevention, and bullying prevention in elementary, middle, and high school.
- Coordinating and supporting teaching grades 4-12 Human Growth and Development curriculum, including SEL in nature-based programming.
- Active member of the advisory committee in middle and high schools, which develops the advisory curriculum, and trains and supports faculty acting as advisors.
- Seek out and attend Professional Development opportunities in keeping with current research and best practices of the school counseling profession.
- Observe the American School Counseling Association code of ethics to maintain the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and other agencies associated with the school.
- Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
Skills and Competencies: - Trauma-informed care training

- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and collaborative skills
- Outstanding communication (verbal and written) skills
- Google Suite for Education, Blackbaud
Credentials: - MA in Counselor Education (School Counseling) preferred
- BA in a related field
- ODE License for Pupil Services in School Counseling
Faculty - Must be willing and able to secure an Ohio Permanent Non-Tax certificate or Professional Teaching license. The school will support you in obtaining this once hired.
