The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. This position works within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation.
Minimum qualifications : A high school diploma and 1 year of post-high school experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction is required.
Vocational training or an associate’s degree in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction from an accredited school or college may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Description of Duties:
The FWCs Northwest Region is seeking an OPS Fish & Wildlife Technician to assist the area biologist with wildlife habitat management and monitoring efforts at four Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) - the Fitzhugh Carter Tract of Econfina Creek, Juniper Creek, Pine Log, and Point Washington WMAs, located in Bay, Calhoun, Walton, and Washington Counties, FL. This position serves cooperatively as part of a multi-agency team to manage and enhance habitats for the benefit of a variety of species and for the enjoyment of Florida residents and visitors. The successful candidate will assist the area biologist, Florida Forest Service (FFS) and Northwest Florida Water Management District (NWFWMD) personnel with multiple aspects of habitat management, facility and infrastructure maintenance, as well as surveying and monitoring of game and non-game wildlife.
This position is responsible for planting and maintaining wildlife food plots to benefit wildlife and ensure a high-quality recreational experience for area users on Juniper Creek, Pine Log, and Point Washington WMAs. The Incumbent will assist with infrastructure construction, maintenance and repair, including roads, trails, culverts, fences, gates, signs, and buildings. Additionally, the position will operate, maintain and repair area equipment and vehicles including trucks, tractors, ATVs, heavy equipment and various implements (disc harrows, mowers, sprayers, etc.). Incumbent also must possess the ability to troubleshoot and repair small engines, implements, and heavy equipment. The successful candidate will assist with the operation of a hunter check station at the Fitzhugh Carter Tract WMA to collect biological data of hunter harvested game, and may periodically assist with administration of special opportunity hunts and fishing events.
The successful candidate will work cooperatively with FFS and NWFWMD personnel to identify and treat invasive vegetation. This position will frequently assist with prescribed fire operations at the Fitzhugh Carter Tract and Pine Log WMAs, and may provide additional support on prescribed burns at other WMAs in the Northwest Region as needed. The successful candidate will assist the area biologist with technical aspects of habitat management and survey implementation (e.g. design, construction, and installation of nest boxes, traps etc.). Incumbent may also opportunistically assist with wildlife surveying and monitoring efforts depending on needs and interest.
The incumbent will interact with various partner agencies and the public to provide information concerning wildlife and area management, rules and regulations. Occasionally the incumbent will attend regional and divisional meetings as well as various trainings as needed.
