Pay Range: $26.44 - $28.84 per hour

The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview: 

The Transplant Assistant works under the direction of the Transplant Coordinator RN by completing direct and indirect patient care tasks which do not require a licensed practitioner in accordance with RWJUH policies and procedures. The Transplant Assistant will also participate in department QAPI activities. 

Qualifications: 

Required: 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. 
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of the position.  
  • Completion of CNA course or at least one year’s experience in an acute care facility or equivalent experience in an sub acute or long term care facility or a nursing student who has completed one clinical rotation.  
  • Current CPR certification. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Assures clinic supplies, including patient education and chart packets are prepared. 
  • Facilitates communication and patient flow through clinic in a timely manner. 
  • Greets patients and performs accurate measurement of temperature, pulse, BP, respiratory rate and weight in outpatient chart and reports alert level results to a RN. 
  • Assists transplant physicians/coordinators with dressing changes, physical examinations and clinic procedures as needed. 
  • Assists with gathering records or scheduling testing as needed during clinic. 
  • Assists transplant surgeons in the preparation and scheduling of PATS and other surgical procedures. 

Pre-Transplant Patient Responsibilities: 

  • Assists pre-transplant coordinators with transplant evaluations by obtaining necessary outside records, and proactively tracking transplant evaluation testing and consultation results. Schedules testing as directed. 
  • Enters information in PATS database per transplant office routine. Charts pertinent information in patient record. 
  • Participates in ESRD meetings, including setting agenda and preparing minutes. Maintains record of minutes. 
  • Assists pre-transplant coordinators and pre-transplant patients in maintaining their waitlist status by keeping records current and obtaining testing for review by coordinator and/or physicians. 
  • Enters data into PATS Axis database and keeps information current. 
  • Assists in facilitating communication with patients dialysis centers and HLA lab to maintain current specimens. 

Living Donor Responsibilities: 

  • Tracks and contacts recipients to follow-up on potential living donors to screen. 
  • Assists coordinator with scheduling and documenting donor evaluation. 

Post Transplant: 

  • Transcribes labs for review. 
  • Schedules biopsies, infusions and surgeries as directed. 
  • Assists with dressing changes and exams as needed. 

Office Functions: 

  • Responsible for distribution of patient results and records that come into transplant office. 
  • Manages requests for records per HIPPA policies. 
  • Adheres to RWJUH policies, procedures, guidelines and CMS and UNOS regulations. 
  • Cross covers front office staff as needed.

  • Identify personal and professional learning and development needs and works with Administrative Director to formulate and implement action. 
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant clinical and administrative issues. 
  • Maintains certifications and competencies are required. 
  • Performs other duties as requested. 
  • Support efforts to improve services and grow the transplant program and achieve organizational objectives. 
  • Participates in QAPI.
