The STEM Curriculum Designer, Workforce Development at the U-M Center for Innovation (UMCI) will design, develop, instruct, and iterate high-impact STEM learning experiences for workforce development programs aimed at learners aged 14 and up. 

You will focus on creating and instructing engaging, hands-on, and industry-aligned STEM curricula that prepares Detroit residents for high-demand careers, academic success, and innovative and entrepreneurial community problem solving across: digital information technology, computational science & engineering, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, automation, and applications of AI.

This position will report to the Director, Academic Content Strategy.

  • Design stackable, skills-based learning pathways that connect short-term credentials to long-term careers.
  • Align curriculum with high-demand STEM fields, including digital tech, AI, automation, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing.
  • Create hands-on, project-based STEM programs for high school students, career changers, and adult learners.
  • Integrate real-world industry challenges, work-based learning, and inclusive, accessible teaching practices.
  • Teach select programs, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Stay ahead of emerging technologies and workforce trends.
  • Work with industry and academic experts to ensure curriculum relevance.
  • Develop assessment tools to measure engagement, skills, and career readiness.
  • Use data and feedback to refine and improve STEM programs.
  • Pilot new initiatives and iterate based on learner and employer insights.
  • Collaborate with employers and workforce boards to integrate experiential learning.
  • Build partnerships with schools and community organizations to expand STEM access.
  • Develop apprenticeships, internships, and mentorship opportunities with local businesses.
  • Help create a collaborative ?learning lab? to empower Detroit students in tech, entrepreneurship, and social impact.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, technology, STEM education, instructional design, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience designing STEM curriculum for workforce training, technical education, or K-12/higher ed STEM programs.
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering, data science, or machine learning experience.
  • Strong understanding of STEM career pathways, competency-based education, and applied learning.
  • Experience educating high-school students for STEM competency in ways that reflect students' culture and experiences.
  • Experience designing hands-on, project-based, and work-integrated STEM learning experiences.
  • Proficiency in using learning management systems (LMS), STEM education tools, and instructional design platforms.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in STEM education, including AI-powered learning tools, AR/VR applications, and adaptive learning systems.
