Special Education Coordinator/Secondary Transition Facilitator

About the Role:

Educational Service Unit #3 is seeking a dedicated Special Education Coordinator/Secondary Transition Facilitator to enhance transition-focused education for youth with disabilities. This role focuses on increasing local capacity, supporting educators, and implementing best practices to improve postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide training, coaching, and technical assistance to educators, administrators, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct regional needs assessments and utilize data for strategic planning.
  • Support the development and implementation of secondary transition plans, activities, and services.
  • Deliver professional development on best practices in secondary transition.
  • Engage with parents, community agencies, and Career & Technical Education programs to enhance student support networks.
  • Maintain a regional assessment library and support educators in identifying appropriate transition assessments.
  • Collaborate with state and regional advisory groups to align efforts with compliance and best practice standards.
  • Track and report on grant-funded activities and professional development outcomes.
  • Facilitate regional team meetings with key stakeholders to address transition-related challenges.
  • Travel within and outside of Nebraska as needed, including overnight stays.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (Master’s degree in education preferred).
  • Valid Nebraska Teaching Certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of secondary teaching experience (leadership or administrative experience preferred).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Expertise in secondary transition practices and adult learning facilitation.
  • Ability to use technology for communication, reporting, and data analysis.
  • Commitment to regular in-person attendance (occasional remote work may be considered).

Salary & Benefits: Negotiable, based on education and experience within the range of $75,000-$80,000.  Paid health and dental for employees.

General Description:  

The role of the Secondary Transition Facilitator is to improve secondary transition-focused education for youth with disabilities by increasing local capacity and facilitating implementation of evidence-based and promising practices in the area of secondary transition.  

Essential Requirements:

  1. No history of child abuse or negligence.

  2. Successfully pass required background checks.

  3. Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required, with Master’s degree in education preferred.

  4. Appropriate Nebraska Teaching Certification.

  5. A minimum of 3 years secondary teaching experience required, with at least 3 years leadership or administration experience in schools preferred.

  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, competent interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.  Ability to communicate using technology, develop reports, and track data.

  7. Foundational knowledge of secondary transition practices, with experience implementing secondary transition plans, activities, and services.  

  8. Expertise in facilitating adult learning.

  9. Regular and dependable in person attendance is required and is considered a condition of employment. The assigned duties of this position may allow consideration of occasional/infrequent remote work with the approval of the supervisor. Remote work is subject to the remote work guidelines and conditions outlined in the job description. The supervisor may withdraw the remote work option at any time.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Understand and comply with the ESU #3 Board of Education Personnel Policies and Employee Handbook.

  2. Provide training and technical assistance to educators in the region.

  3. Communicate and support administrators at the ESU, district, and school levels.

  4. Conduct a regional needs assessment, analyze data from multiple data sources, and use this information for planning.

  5. Identify grant activities and events specific to the region that align with best practice and compliance standards to promote increased postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities. 

  6. Provide professional development opportunities to ESUs, districts, and schools to promote best practices in secondary transition.  

  7. Connect educators to evidence-based practices and resources in the area of secondary transition.  

  8. Assist ESUs, districts, and schools in identifying a variety of age-appropriate transition assessments and maintain a regional assessment library.  

  9. Participate as an active member of the State Transition Advisory Group and the State Regional Facilitator Group .

  10. Communicate regional transition activities to NDE including assessment and IEP compliance/monitoring.

  11. Engage parents of students with disabilities to promote awareness of services, supports, and resources in the community.  

  12. Communicate and collaborate with all regional stakeholders, including Career and Technical Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, and other community agencies that support students with disabilities in transition to postsecondary activities.

  13. Facilitate Regional Team Meetings with community agencies and district liaisons to share information, assess current needs, and develop a problem solving process to address needs of students with disabilities and the barriers they may face with the transition process.  

  14. Organize and maintain an up-to-date list of transition liaisons in the assigned region.

  15. Develop and report evaluation and attendance data for grant activities and events. 

  16. Participate in ongoing professional learning opportunities at the state and national level.

  17. Ability to travel, in-state and out-of-state, including overnight stay.

  18. Other duties as assigned.
