Compensation:

Hourly Pay Range: $20.13 /hour (Plus a $0.50 shift differential)

TEMPORARY additional differential of $2.50/hr for all hours worked.

Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC). Adair Acute Care are a 60-bed facility, certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Position is located at Osawatomie State Hospital, days/hours may vary. This position may require you to work weekends. A negative drug screen is required as a condition of employment.

Osawatomie State Hospital Adair Acute Care is funded in part by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is subject to requirements bestowed by Federal and State levels of government conditions of participation.

Position Summary :

The purpose of the Safety and Security Officer I position is to provides fire protection for patients, staff, and visitors. It directs the enforcement of Interim Life Safety Codes, Fire safety inspections, ensures compliance with all rules and regulations from the State Fire Marshall Office, CMS, and Joint Commission. This position performs numerous duties and assignments in support of hospital operations. Telephone operator, 911 operators, conducts searches at the Admissions, First Responder duties, de-escalate physical confrontations, operates the hospital Visitor Center, serves as an Admissions Clerk when coverage is needed, escort patients, conducts physical security inspections of all 50 hospital buildings, assists nursing with administration of patient meds, patrols grounds, enforces traffic codes, maintains hospital Operations Log, and other duties as assigned by supervisor. It reports to the Shift Supervisor and acts as a Fire Responder for any/ all emergencies.

The essential functions of this position require physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or restrain residents with or without assistance and respond to aggressive resident behavior with specific, trained techniques. Must be able to observe and respond to residents in distress.


Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalency and valid Kansas Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications: Prior firefighter experience and prior crisis management experience.

Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services. Persons hired must also pass a law enforcement security clearance in compliance with policies of the Department of Aging and Disability Services.

Key Tasks/Duties:

Inspects Hospital buildings in accordance with National Fire Protection Association 101 (Life Safety Code), and State Fire Marshal’s Office to provide a safe and secure therapeutic environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Implements corrective actions for deficiencies found during the inspections of buildings. Perform station care of the Fire Station as needed/assigned.

Conducts and observes emergency preparedness drills to provide for safety of patients, staff, and visitors of the Hospital. Observes evacuations of buildings and records and reports times and problems. Provides training for staff of building evacuation procedures. Responds to fire emergencies and assists in evacuation procedures. Actively seeks to maintain proficiency in evacuation techniques. Performs drills on emergency operations, evacuation techniques, physical and psychological first aid, search techniques, any other training as assigned by supervisor or Chief of Security.

Patrols campus area on foot and in patrol car, and walk through zones on the units as assigned, in order to provide for protection and security of state property, patients, staff, and visitors of the Hospital. Checks buildings for signs of entry, and door locks to assure no unauthorized entry has or will occur. Confronts unauthorized persons for questioning, routes and detains them, as necessary. Intercedes to stop crimes against persons and property. Contacts Osawatomie Police Department to assist when necessary.

Searches for and apprehends unaccounted for patients to provide for their safety. Assists with returned patients apprehended by law enforcement agencies.

Responds to requests for assistance with combative patients to prevent injuries to patient, staff, and others. Requests additional officers respond if the situation escalates. Requests a Code II be announced over the Public-Address System if additional staff is needed to assist. In many cases, high stress tolerance must be maintained by an officer. Officer must be skillful in helping to resolve conflicts and must be able to work collaborative with others.

Stand by at the Admissions Office for assistance to prevent injuries to patient and staff. Officers must be empathic of new arrivals as this may be the first contact with this hospital, and it is important to project a positive image. Transports patient to ward area following admission. Accounts for patient’s personal properties, and prohibited properties in accordance with pertinent Hospital Procedures.

Code enforcement of all Visitor policies and procedures.

Completes all required annual paperwork/CBT’s, EXPO, Incident command, CPR, CPI, First Aid, Infosec, and any other trainings as assigned.

Monthly and weekly building checks. Employee Fire, Safety and Employee Drill sheets monthly.

Officers are to be proficient in knowing how to dispatch. An annual performance test will be administered for evaluation of basic knowledge and operation of the dispatch position.

Issues courtesy reminder tickets for violation of traffic laws to provide for a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors of the Hospital.

Enforcement of Uniform / Dress Code policies and all other non- clinical hospital policies.

Investigates crimes against patients, staff, and visitors in order to provide a safe and secure environment. Assists in investigations by the State Investigator, Risk Management Director, and Patients Representative. Interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects. Therefore, possessing problem solving techniques is crucial to officers. Secures the crime scene and records pertinent information. Cooperates with local, state, federal, and military authorities in arrests, or the transporting of custody. Completes reports and related paperwork in a neat, complete, legible, accurate, and timely manner. Attends all in house meetings/ trainings as scheduled. Complete any other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
