The MN Sentencing Guidelines is looking for their next Research Analyst Intermediate position. This position collects, processes, and analyzes data for research on sentencing practices and provides assistance and understanding of the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines policies and procedures. Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare sentencing data for entry into a monitoring system to allow policymakers and the public to make informed choices regarding criminal justice policy.
  • Provide research support to Commission and staff so they can proceed in their tasks.
  • Prepare/interpret/analyze data on sentencing practices for Commission inquiries/projects/reports/responses to information requests to inform the Commission’s policy choices.
  • Understand and apply complex sentencing policies to various cases to promote just and uniform application of sentencing policies.
  • Assist with website maintenance and updates to provide the public with access to information pertaining to the Sentencing Guidelines.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) year of professional experience in data collection, coding, processing, and analysis.
  • Knowledge of or experience with statistics and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge or experience using databases (e.g., Microsoft Access), spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel), statistical reporting packages (e.g., IBM-SPSS, R), and visualization software tools.
  • Knowledge or experience creating reports by collecting, compiling, and presenting data from multiple sources in an organized format.
  • Ability to multitask and meet multiple deadlines.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Sociology, or closely related field.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and sentencing policy.
  • Experience conducting research, statistics, and/or quantitative analysis.
  • Experience using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) or comparable statistical analysis system.
  • Experience working effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
