Job Description

Summary: Provides pharmaceutical services for the In-Office Dispensary by entering prescriptions into the computer, obtaining prior authorizations, submitting claims, selecting drug from shelf and labeling, and maintaining inventories.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Prescription entry and processing new and refill prescriptions (80% of time); support of various pharmacy functions; and labeling and packaging medications under the direct supervision of a Dispensing Physician
  2. Responsible for obtaining patient’s current prescription drug coverage information
  3. Act as a patient advocate by ensuring the patient’s prescribed drug therapy is followed as prescribed
  4. Coordinate patients’ prescribed pharmacy care with their healthcare providers to ensure that drug therapy is successful
  5. Document any pertinent communication with the patient, provider, clinical staff, insurance company, etc. in the Electronic Medical Record
  6. Coordinate prior approval requests and follow-up to ensure the process has been completed; document all requests
  7. Answer incoming provider and patient calls and troubleshoot/resolve any requests or questions promptly
  8. Ensure all prescriptions are checked by the Dispensing Physician
  9. Inform the Prescribing Provider or their clinical assistant of any adverse reactions or patient complaints
  10. Assist with obtaining patient financial assistance through one of the foundations or patient assistance programs
  11. Notify Dispensary Manager of any requests or issues that are not able to be resolved
  12. Perform all tasks in a safe manner that is consistent with corporate policies as well as state and federal laws

  Education Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent required. 

  Experience Required: Active/current pharmacy technician certification issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) ; Eligible for Registration with NC Board of Pharmacy Required - Within 30 Days of Hire

  Performance Requirements (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

  Knowledge of:

  • the medical practice protocols, AUNC protocols in particular, related to scheduling patient appointments and scheduling surgery;
  • both manual and computerized scheduling systems; and
  • customer service principles and techniques.

Skills in:

  • communicating effectively with physicians/clinicians about scheduling preferences;
  • maintaining master appointment schedule on computer;
  • written and oral communication, and purchasing supplies and medication;
  • communicating effectively with patients, making them feel comfortable and welcome within the practice.

  Ability to:

  • multi-task effectively, dealing pleasantly and efficiently with multiple phone calls (cell & land line as required), in-office patients, staff, physicians and others;
  • troubleshoot situations escalated to team lead and respond appropriately;
  • communicate calmly and clearly with patients about their appointments or surgeries in all circumstances, including when they are ill or have an emergency; and
  • create and facilitate effective communication among all care coordinators.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, scanners, telephones, etc.

  Work Environment: Position is in a well-lighted, temperature-controlled office environment.

  Mental/Physical Requirements: Most sedentary with some standing, walking, or reaching. Involves daily and repetitive data entry and periodic stress from the high volume of patient calls/requests. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
