Location Site: Salem Hospital, 890 Oak Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97301
Department: Lab Clinical Services
Position Type: Full Time, 40 hours/week, Non-Exempt
Schedule: 2:00pm - 10:30pm, Monday - Friday, Rotating Weekends

Your role with us

The medical laboratory scientist plays a critical role in the laboratory, utilizing technical expertise to perform complex testing, analyze results, and troubleshoot issues while ensuring compliance with laboratory procedures and accreditation standards. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. In this role, the MLS will perform advanced testing, participate in quality control and quality assurance initiatives, and contribute to the efficient operation of the laboratory.

What you'll do

  • Performs laboratory testing accurately with minimal supervision, prioritizing and reporting results within minimum turnaround times while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Processes specimens correctly, resolves problems, and verifies results before releasing to ensure accurate patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Performs quality control procedures, investigates and documents problems, and takes corrective action to ensure compliance with laboratory standards.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS) and performs routine and emergency instrument maintenance to ensure optimal equipment function.
  • Stays current with departmental changes and advancements, performing complex testing and procedures as needed, including specialized areas like Flow Cytometry.
  • Exhibits flexibility and teamwork, communicating effectively with colleagues, managing workload, and ensuring timely follow-up of outstanding test requests.
  • Ensures efficient laboratory operation by monitoring inventory, evaluating new products and procedures, and optimizing resource utilization.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and improve professional skills, with a minimum requirement of 12 hours of CEUs per year, and assists in training and mentoring new staff members.


Required qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized program of medical technology or equivalent (MLT), or a bachelor's degree from a recognized school of medical technology or equivalent (MLS).
  • Certification as MLT (ASCP/AMT) for MLT roles, or MLS or MT (ASCP or AMT) certification required within six months of hire for MLS/MT roles.
  • Participation in a minimum of 12 CEUs per year.
