Department of Professional & Financial Regulation

Job Class Code: 7041

Grade: 20/Professional & Technical

Salary: $27.83 -$39.02/Hour (*Salary includes 12% Recruitment & Retention Stipend)

Location: Home-based, Statewide travel, vehicle supplied

Opening Date: December 22, 2025

Closing Date: January 8, 2026

Safety in motion starts with you, a certified Elevator Inspector. When stepping into an elevator or onto a ski lift, you trust it will carry you safely to your destination. That trust is made possible by the critical work of Elevator Inspectors. As the expert behind the scenes, ensuring these systems are not only functional but meet the highest safety standards keeps people moving—and keeps them safe.

The DPFR Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Elevator and Tramway Safety Program needs elevator inspectors to protect public health, safety and welfare. Elevator inspectors work independently from a home office and in the field throughout Maine to:

  • Inspect, register, and certify new or modified elevators before public use ensuring compliance with safety standards, laws, regulations, and codes. Take action, including suspending or revoking certifications, when public safety is at risk.

  • Investigate complaints and accidents caused by elevators and tramways and testify in court hearings as an expert witness on safety violations

  • Document equipment history, including dimensions, age, condition, location, and inspection dates on all elevators and tramways

  • Ensure that elevators and tramways are inspected periodically by their owners pursuant to Maine law

  • Examine and license elevator mechanics, inspectors, and tramway personnel to maintain operational integrity

  • Draft recommended legislation and safety regulations to enhance public protection

Position Logistics

Because travel to inspection sites across Maine is a requirement, a State vehicle is provided. By working directly with elevator companies to schedule inspection appointments, you’ll enjoy the flexibility of setting your own schedule. Work is primarily completed in the field at the location of the elevator to be tested or from your home office. Field locations may be fully finished or in process of being built.

Ensure the systems that keep people moving are safe, reliable, and up to code. Public safety is in your hands—take the ride with us!

What you need:

  • Knowledge of investigative methods and safety regulations for elevators and tramways

  • Understanding of machinery, electricity, motors, and lift systems

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to conduct exams, build relationships, and provide expert testimony

  • Proficiency in writing reports and maintaining accurate records

Minimum qualifications:

Education, training and/or experience in inspection and enforcement of federal and state laws, rules, and regulations governing compliance with elevator and tramway installations, demonstrating competency operating and testing elevator controls and safety devices, understanding and applying applicable codes and standards, and solving mechanical and/or regulatory problems.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Certification as an ASME Qualified Elevator Inspector.

If you are not already a certified elevator inspector, the agency provides assistance towards becoming certified, including on the job training, certification, studying, and courses.
