Iowa State University is seeking a Community Capitals Scientist to support research for a recently awarded USDA Sustainable Agricultural Systems grant focused on the sustainability of dairy goat production in the United States. This role involves assessing both the current and potential community support for dairy goat production and its products using the Community Capitals Framework. By applying this framework, the scientist will identify opportunities to enhance ecosystem health, economic security, and social well-being through the transformation and marketing of dairy goat products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, and soap, as well as byproducts like meat goats.
The position requires conducting interviews with individual farmers to understand the resources they have for integrating animals into their farming systems. At the community level, the scientist will facilitate focus groups with community leaders and prospective farmers to evaluate these resources on a broader scale. This research will involve travel to three designated regions—California, the Midwest, and the Southeast—to engage directly with stakeholders and collect essential data.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a rapidly growing industry. Your work will directly support economic growth by helping communities develop sustainable practices that strengthen local food systems and enhance market opportunities for farmers and producers.
Candidate will be hired as a Research Scientist II.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
This is a term position that may have an opportunity for renewal.
For guaranteed consideration, please apply before April 16, 2025.
